From our personal experiences, we have had multiple backpack usage. we can definitely tell you that the old saying "You get what you pay for" cannot be more truer in this case. When it comes to picking the perfect backpack, money should not be your main concern. The investment will definitely pay off during your backpacking/trekking trip when you are enjoying your trip 100% instead of dreading the uncomfortable weight on your shoulder and lower back.
This are not rules by any means but more like guidelines to what worked for us in the past. Just like anything in life this is just to give you a broad spectrum in which you can judge what to use on your personal trip since everybody has different needs.
1 - 2 Day trip: 15 - 45 Liter backpack
2 - 3 Day trip: 45 - 60 Liter backpack
3 - 5 Day trip: 60 - 80 Liter backpack
5 or more: 80+ Liter backpack
Usually most backpacks come with the brand of the backpack, the name of the style and a number. This number is usually the capacity size of the backpack (I.E. Gregory Deva 60) We really think that a 60-65 liter backpack are the best all around backpacks. Keep in mind that everything you put in and/or on the backpack you will have to carry for the amount of time your trip last. As a rule of thumb you should not carry more than 30% of your own body weight. If you are carrying a heavy load then its time to take a look at your load and get rid of some none-essential items. We'll discuss the essential item in a following blog.
